Saskatchewan Blue Cross Recess Guardians exists for one purpose – to bring play back to recess. The organization offers kids a healthy, constructive experience in a controlled environment. It empowers youth to lead through play that is inclusive, active and, most importantly, fun. The program is currently running in over 100 schools across Saskatchewan.
Mike McDonald, Executive Director, founded the program in 2008. He was born and raised in Saskatoon, and graduated from the University of Saskatchewan in 2010 with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology.
Mike served on the Board for the Saskatoon Sports Council for five years, as President for the last three. In 2014 he was a CBC SK Future 40 winner, recognized as a new generation change-maker in the area of Community Leadership.
“I consider myself extremely lucky to wake up every morning to do work that really makes a difference. The power of play is incredibly important. We are giving youth the skills to lead their peers while increasing their physical activity and having fun!”
Kale Johnson, Associate Director, has been with the program since 2010. He is currently responsible for program implementation and training. Saskatoon is also Kale’s home town. He graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a degree in Sociology.
Kale’s experience with youth was gained by working 5 summers at the Southwoods Summer Camp in upstate New York, the last years as Athletic Director.
“My favourite parts of the program are being able to work with youth all across the province, and giving them an opportunity to lead their peers in a fun environment.”
